Troubleshooter of Error: Cannot run exe files or install programs
Cannot run exe files or install programs
Whenever I tried to run an exe file, the following message appears: Windows cannot find 'C:\Windows\regedit.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. Even though I have checked that regedit.exe exists and is in the folder C:\Windows\ Such message appears when I double-click a exe file or run the program through the search box at the bottom of the start menu.
Note: When I enter the safe mode, I can run some exe files such as the regedit.exe or msconfig.exe, but not so in normal modeSome programs that I have previous installed can be executed normally, such as Word, Powerpoint, Skype, etc. Any suggestions of how I could fix this problem?
Keys to the Problem Cannot run exe files or install programs
Hello Howard Fu, It sounds as if you may have a Virus or malware infection. Have your run a Antivirus? If not, you can download Microsoft Security Essentials. Clickhere for a link.
Once you have checked for virus, if you are still having a problem, click on the following article number. KB Article ID: 950505 - When you run an .exe file on a Windows Vista-based or Windows 7-based computer, the file may start a different program I would also suggest you run SFC /scannow to see if you have any corrupt system files. Click Start Type: CMD, from the results, right click CMD Click 'Run as Administrator' At the Command Prompt, type: sfc /scannow
This will check for any integrity violations and fix any corrupted operating system files.
Restart your system. See: KB Article ID: 929833 -How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 Hope this helps.
